The Honda Civic Type R has now scored four key championships in the world of touring cars after taking three titles in one weekend (October 1-2).
Gordon ‘Flash’ Shedden took the driver’s crown in the MSA Dunlop British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch in dramatic style, passing points leader Sam Tordoff in the very last race of the last round of the season, in similar fashion to last year, winning by just two points, in his NGTC-specification Type R, built and run by Team Dynamics.
The team fought off some really tough competition from the West Surrey Racing BMWs and Team BMR Subarus to clinch the title.
In addition, the JAS Motorsport-built Civic Type R TCRs delivered two titles in two days, with Brit Josh Files winning the inaugural ADAC TCR Germany crown on Saturday, October 1st with the Target Competition team at Hockenheim.
And a mere 24 hours after File secured his championship, Kris Richard from Switzerland followed things up by taking the FIA European Touring Car Cup after a couple of second-place finishes at Imola in Italy in his Rikli Motorsport Civic Type R.
Richard won a total of five races throughout the 2016 ETCC season, including one at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, where the Civic Type R still holds the front-wheel drive lap record.
The weekend’s excellent results mean that four major touring car series have been won by Civic Type Rs this year after Roberto Colciago won the TCR Italy title with his AGS team a week earlier.
And the success of the Type R continued as Colciago and Kevin Gleason took victories in their races at the TCR International Series at Sepang in Malaysia.
The Type R could even add another title to its collection in the next couple of weeks as Stephane Lemeret sits in the lead of the TCR Benelux Series after picking up multiple victories throughout the year, racing for Boutsen Ginion Racing.
Philip Crossman, the Managing Director of Honda UK said of the weekend’s successes: “To have this level of success in one weekend is an amazing achievement for the Civic Type R.
“Back to back drivers’ championships in the BTCC for Gordon was exciting enough at Brands Hatch on Sunday – but to compound it with the other three successes is outstanding.
“The new Civic Type R, which we unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last week, is going to have a lot to live up to!”

Honda has revealed the prototype for their new Honda Civic Type R at the 2016 Mondial de L’Automobile in Paris, giving us all an insight into what to expect when it is officially launched next year.
While there’s no performance data available as of yet, there’s plenty of information on the bodywork and aesthetics of the vehicle, which we’re going to run through below.
The new prototype is based on the low and wide proportions of the most recent Civic hatchback and is enhanced by a muscular body styling and modifications designed to help the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance.
The vehicle’s exterior also has a unique, highly reflective, brushed aluminium-effect finish.
At the front of the vehicle, you’ll find an aggressive looking bumper with a winged carbon fibre splitter and a sporty red accent line, as well as slatted ducts which add width to the bumper and diamond mesh inserts to fill the sculpted air intakes.
The famous red ‘H’ badges will also sit above a new air vent found at the front of the car and there is also a new intake on the bonnet and an air scoop found centrally in a trapezoidal recess.
The LED headlights, indicators and side repeaters feature smoked lenses, which reflect the vehicle’s more aggressive character.
Carbon fibre side skirts will run the length of the wheelbase, with enlarged arches to accommodate the 20-inch black alloy wheels (an inch higher than the current Type R hatch) with a red accent and 245-section high-performance tyres.
On the wider rear bumper, a carbon fibre diffuser will run underneath, framing the three fully-functional tailpipes with directional strakes at each side.
The central tailpipe is slightly smaller and is a bright metallic red, and unique peaks at the roof flanks point toward the dramatic and striking rear wing.
All of these exterior features have been designed with the vehicle’s performance in mind, with everything serving its own function.
This next-gen Civic Type R was engineered as part of the same development programme as the other members of the Civic family and will be produced at Honda of the UK manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon, with it expected to hit showrooms in the second half of next year.
However, the new Type R will also be sold outside of Europe, in both Japan and the US, making it the first time that a Honda-badged Type R has been officially sold in North America.
It’s certainly a punchy looking design for a family car, so we look forward to seeing how the final model looks when it’s revealed next year (an actual sale date and price have yet to be confirmed).

The ever brilliant Honda Civic Type-R is undoubtedly one of the greatest hot-hatchbacks of all time. Since the first generation was released back in 1997, they have gone on to be a firm favourite on our roads.
It’s also fair to assume that if you own a Civic Type-R then you are probably a car lover. If you are then you don’t just see your Honda as a run-about but something to be proud of and maintain as best you can.
Not only do you want your car to run as well as possible, you want it to look good too, and don’t mind finding the right accessories to do so.
Here at Cox Motor Parts we love to help Civic Type-R owners make the most of their beloved car, and that’s why we have put together this list of Type-R 2015 accessories to give your Type-R that personal touch.
We’ve all seen our fair share of botched exterior upgrades on hatchbacks, be it oversized side skirts or an ill-fitting replacement exhaust.
The mistake plenty of people make is that they don’t by genuine manufacturer accessories, like the ones we offer at Cox Motor Parts.
This carbon exterior pack gives you all of the classic touches to make your Type-R look even sharper. The pack includes a carbon fibre rear wing, carbon fibre air intake garnishes and carbon fibre tailgate finishes. The pack is available with either red or black trim.
Not dissimilarly to the point above, we have all seen plenty of bodged attempts of brightening up a car’s interior, be it a hideous gear knob or a fluff steering wheel cover.
If you want your car to look just as sharp inside as it does on the outside, then take a look at this carbon interior pack.
This includes carbon fibre air outlet decorations, carbon fibre glove box decoration and carbon fibre centre console decoration.
As well as being one of the all time great hatch-back road cars, the Civic Type-R is also known for being a successful rally car.
The rally version obvious has slightly different spec to the road version, however you can add some of that rally flair with this rear diffuser.
To replace your current diffuser, this stunning fitting stays true to the Type-R brand with the distinctive red finish.
As this list probably makes clear, accessorising your interior is just as popular as the exterior. One firm favourite for this is of course footwell carpets.
These particularly elegant carpets bring that extra touch of class to your interior. Mostly black with a Type-R red trim, the carpets also feature a metal Type-R badge.
No matter how sporty and tuned you want your Type-R to be, it’s always smart to take practical measures.
If you are the sort of person who won’t even let a friend in your car with a bottle drink in case of spillage (very understandable), then this dog cage might be right up your street.
Allowing your pup to freely roam on the back seats risks the chance of marks or tears in the seats, which would of course be tragic.
Instead, take a look at this brilliant dog cage which fits in the headspace of your boot. Simply remove your retractable boot cover so that your dog has the required headroom and you are ready to go.
